Quota
As a newbie thief, you shouldn't worry too much about the Quota. Just learn the game mechanics, find out where the shops are, learn which shops have nice stocks (for stealing later) and get to know people. When you do get some Xps, and eventually enough skill to learn stealing commands, you will then be able to come off leave (you're automatically on leave of absence from the guild when you join) and start stealing. Make sure you have your license on you at all times. Do -not- try to steal without it, you will be punished otherwise (thrown over a bridge into the Ankh, which not only hurts, it may also result in you getting lost for hours in the Sto Plains *mutter*).
Your maximum quota is your Guild Level + 100, and the minimum is one-quarter of your Guild Level. The length of each quota period is 12 online hours (that is to say it won't continue to countdown while you're not on the MUD). Make sure you reach your minimum quota or you'll be fined by the guild. The Guild will take 30% of the value of the items you stole. So if you steal a 100 dollar ring, the guild will want to be paid 30 dollars. You can then fence the ring.
Your Quota only applies inside AM, and only steals done inside AM will count towards your quota. Other places outside of AM, such as KLK and Sto Lat have other methods of preventing you from stealing. I suggest not stealing at all from shops in KLK until you are quite an advanced thief. CWC will also be bringing in a defence system for thieves, so make sure you read any Discworld announcements or the Discworld thieves board.
To view your quota, simply "check quota", "read quota" and "review receipts".

Be sure to keep an eye on your quota, as it's always ticking away while you're playing. If you choose to take a leave of absence from your quota, just pop into Kordanes office and say you would like to take a leave of absence. Kordane will then take your licence from you and please......remember not to steal in Ankh-Morpork while you are on leave. You will get heavied once you get inside the city limits. Once you are ready to return from leave, just pop back into Kordane's office and say "I have returned from leave". Kordane will give you another licence and you can steal to your hearts content in AM once more.
